GOBI DESSERT FOR AIDS

Jerry Song Zhi Liang “I’m gonna do something, younger then Jeff.” As a student, we all must manage our time wisely. Especially if you are taking up medical studies. From an average day at the university, faculty and hospital ward posting; there was a third-year medical student that choose to do something extra. Song Zhi Liang also known as Jerry Song, took up a challenge to join the Gobi March Run 2017 and raised awareness about HIV/AIDS in Malaysia. The race is far from a normal run, the track takes place at the Northern China and Southern Mongolia with the length of 250-kilometres and a seven days period to reach the finish line. This Deserts Gobi March passed through difficult terrain at the Tian Shan Mountain, and facing the sand dune of the Gobi Desert. Afraid and nervous, Jerry Song musters his courage to challenge himself. “I have been running since I was 16 and had only completed two full marathons”. At the age 21, Jerry Song is the youngest Malaysian to cross the finish line in the Gobi March Run. Currently he is completing his study as a MBBS student at UM. “It started all during my first year, from my faculty campaign Eradicate AIDS and Stigma for Equality. I fully support in this campaign as a one of the member in the medical society and at the second year I took up this programme and become the Vice Director.” Thanks to his involvement toward the programme, Jerry discovers another way to raising fund and spread awareness for the Malaysia Aids Foundation by performing extreme challenge. The goal of this extreme challenge run is to raise fund MFA and spread awareness HIV and AIDs for the community. Amazed and inspired by Jeff Lau who was around 24 at that time, and told himself “I’m gonna do something, younger then Jeff.” As the Red Ribbon Youth Advocate, Jerry is aiming to spread awareness and ending HIV/AIDS by 2030. With series of conference and campaign that gather Malaysian youth together against the fight with HIV and AIDS. Zero New Infection, Zero Discrimination, Zero AIDS Related Death. Upon confirmation in participating the Gobi March Run, so begins his training regime. Running at an average of 10km per day and meditating to strengthening the mind. As a student, Jerry makes sure that his training fit in with classes and finishing his daily run quota at night. To make sure that he adapt to the new environment during the run, he began trained at varies places like Pantai Klebong, Penang Hill, Bukit Tadur and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia. Persistence and eager for achievement is the source for Jerry to finish the run. With every new hurdle and harder obstacles to overcome, it is from remembering those that supported him and recalling his own purpose that makes him feel disappointment is not an option here. “Nobility comes from courage.” -Jerry Song- University of Malaya (UM) students have a healthy life style, and a healthy competitive environment around the campus. Whether it is studies, sports, curriculums or clubs. UM students have always strived to achieve and do their best. They are stimulated independently and dependently, with their lecturers, friends and families; who are supportive and provide guidance in achieving the students goal.
